What it does
OSRM (Open Source Routing Machine) calculates routes on OpenStreetMap roads: driving directions with distance, travel time and turn-by-turn steps, plus distance tables between many points, matching GPS tracks to roads and finding the nearest road. Coordinates go in the URL and results come back as JSON. The public demo server at router.project-osrm.org is for light use; you can also run the open source software yourself. Free for reasonable non-commercial use, no key needed, at most one request per second.
