What it does
Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) provides resizable virtual servers in the cloud. Through its web service API (and the AWS SDKs for most languages) you can start, stop and configure server instances in minutes, choose from hundreds of instance types, attach storage and networking, and scale capacity up and down as your needs change. You pay only for the capacity you use. Paid, with a 12-month free tier for new AWS accounts.
