UI Avatars creates avatar images with a person's initials, for example as a default profile picture next to user names. Request ui-avatars.com/api/?name=John+Doe and set size, background and text colour, font size, rounding and bold in the URL. Images come as SVG or PNG and can be used straight in an img tag. Free, no key needed and no sign-up.
