The DigitalNZ API searches the metadata of millions of items from New Zealand libraries, museums, archives and government bodies, such as photos, newspapers, books and recordings, for example to show historical images of a town. Requests are GET calls and the answers are JSON. Free, no key needed; a free key, sent in the Authentication-Token header, gives support and a higher rate than the shared limit for anonymous calls.
